Identity Attack Surface: How to Reduce Risk Pathways Before They Escalate

Identity Attack Surface: How to Reduce Risk Pathways Before They Escalate

Keeping the Identity Attack Surface under control involves mapping all potential entry points for a cyberattack and then systematically eliminating these risks. Because every orphaned account, excessive permission, or uncontrolled non-human identity is a vulnerability that can jeopardize an organization’s digital ecosystem.

The list of problems that an unmanaged Identity Attack Surface can trigger is long. These include a higher likelihood of security breaches (with the financial and reputational consequences they entail) and significant risks of non-compliance with key regulations such as the GDPR, among others.

In response, Identity Attack Surface management focuses on three actions: discovering and mapping identity risks; implementing continuous monitoring; and enabling the automatic and systematic remediation of potential threats. Below, we break down exactly how proper management works to fortify the Identity Attack Surface.

What Elements Pose a Risk to the Identity Attack Surface?

Managing the Identity Attack Surface focuses on detecting and remediating any risks that increase exposure within an organization’s identity ecosystem.

This approach puts current security paradigms into practice, in which identities are understood as the new perimeter to be secured, such that every user, service account, and non-human identity is a potential entry point that must be sealed off.

More specifically, managing the Identity Attack Surface should focus on identifying the following issues

  • Excessive permissions: identities with more privileges than necessary to perform their tasks, which contradict the principle of least privilege that should guide secure identity management.
  • Orphaned accounts: accounts that have no active user using them but that retain access to resources. They are often a direct consequence of failures in identity lifecycle management and pose specific risks precisely because there is no active user who can detect anomalies.
  • Mismanaged roles: Issues with role-based access control (RBAC) can also pose challenges for the identity attack surface. An example might be a “project coordinator” role that accumulates permissions from different areas to avoid having to request new access each time, but which, in practice and in day-to-day operations, does not actually require many of those permissions.
  • Third Parties: This category includes risks related to identities for vendors, partners, consultants, and others who expand the attack surface and must be subject to strict control, as they often involve privileged access. Examples include identities created for a marketing agency or an IT vendor.
  • Technical identities: Non-human identities—including service accounts, tokens, and API keys—often have excessive privileges and blind spots in their management.
  • Indirect paths: Any potential path between identities that enables lateral movement or privilege escalation must be monitored.

How can we map and reduce the attack surface before an attacker can exploit it?

Manual and periodic verification and remediation processes are insufficient in today’s landscape, where identities are multiplying and, in most organizations, creating extremely dynamic and complex environments. To address this, the solution lies in implementing tools to automatically, systematically, and continuously discover and mitigate risks across the Identity Attack Surface.

In the face of all this chaos, Soffid’s converged architecture transforms disorder into precision.

Soffid doesn’t just facilitate risk discovery—it eliminates blind spots. It maps all identities in the ecosystem, centralizes visibility into permissions, configurations, and access paths, and takes action: revoking excessive permissions, eliminating orphaned accounts, and flagging indirect escalation paths before an attacker can exploit them.

Monitoring is continuous. Remediation is automatic. And because AM, IGA, PAM, and IRC share the same identity engine, control covers the entire ecosystem—not just a part of it.

Soffid is the only IAM platform developed entirely in Europe with ENS ALTO and Common Criteria certification. Control over the Identity Attack Surface doesn’t just work—it can be proven.
